Waltham Abbey Waltham Abbey Essex
|
The original building was said to have been built ( by the latter King Harold) as a shrine to keep 'The Miraculous Cross' which had been transported from Somerset in the early 11th Century and was said to possess magical powers to cure the sick and infirm. Sadly the Cross disappeared after the Abbey was later dissolved by Henry VIII in 1540. The grounds are also alleged to be where King Harold was buried after being killed in the Battle of Hastings |
